TPO vs. Shingle: Is a Flat Roof Right for Your Florida Home?

Flat and low-slope roofing shows up more than people expect on Florida homes, additions, lanais, garages, and older ranch-style houses often have a flat or low-slope section even when the main roof is shingle or tile. If you're dealing with one, TPO is worth understanding.

What TPO actually is. TPO, thermoplastic polyolefin, is a single-ply membrane roofing system installed in large sheets and heat-welded at the seams. It's the modern standard for flat and low-slope roofing, replacing older tar-and-gravel and built-up roofing systems in most residential and commercial applications.

Why flat sections can't just use shingles. Shingles rely on gravity and overlap to shed water, which requires a minimum slope to work properly. On a flat or low-slope section, water doesn't run off fast enough, and shingles installed on too shallow a pitch will fail early and leak. That's why flat sections need a membrane system like TPO instead.

Heat and energy performance. TPO is typically white or light-colored and reflects a significant amount of solar heat, which is a real advantage in Florida versus older dark, heat-absorbing flat roof systems. That reflectivity can translate into a noticeably cooler attic or top-floor space.

Durability and maintenance. A properly installed TPO roof holds up well against UV exposure, ponding water, and Florida's heat cycles. Seams are the most common point of failure over time, which is why heat-welded seams (rather than adhesive-only) and proper installation matter more on TPO than on almost any other roofing system.

When it makes sense.
